Portsmouth: Naval gazing and seaside scoots

Posted on 7 August 202214 August 2022 by Rob Ainsley

En route home from the Isle of Wight, I found Portsmouth surprisingly difficult to tear myself away from. Though that was largely because a station fire knocked out the trains for four hours. But spare time in a city is never a problem with a bike, so I spent the hiatus enjoyably exploring the city’s naval quarter and the seafront cycle path.

And when I got back to the train station and found the trains not yet quite running again, I was pleased to find it had a very good waiting room.

Well, a Wetherspoons, anyway.

Now, I may be a hopelessly non-military, non-naval pacifist, but even I recognise that. I know exactly what it is. It’s a ship.
It’s Greece! It’s Malta! It’s Spain! ―Oh, it’s Portsmouth.
A man with a dog in his backpack. Hope it’s waterproof.
Statue of Nelson, the famous cricket score: 111, because he had one eye, one arm, and one doesn’t ask what the other thing is.
