Windermere 1: I can resist anything except…

Posted on 25 June 20192 April 2021 by Rob Ainsley

So, I’m researching bike routes around Windermere. What better way to explore the Lake District than on two wheels? Well, by hiking the fells instead, obviously. Lakes roads can be busy and unpleasant. Unless you choose your routes carefully, which of course is exactly what I’m here to do…

A sign I’d like to see in every town in Britain, not just the back lane down to Grasmere.

Pint of Brathay Gold (4%, mildly hoppy, hints of fruit salad, so perhaps counts as one of five a day) by Barngates Brewery, aka the Drunken Duck brewpub near Hawkshead. I hadn’t intended to have a pint, but after a long hot day on Lakes back lanes, the prospect of a cold refreshing golden ale with this view of Windermere was too inviting. As Oscar Wilde said, ‘I can resist anything except a pint of decent real ale after a bike ride’.

Nice flat bridlepath on the western shore of Windermere. What’s all this nonsense about Lakes cycling being hilly?
