Salisbury 2: Plain speaking, Gold Hills

Posted on 10 October 20182 April 2021 by Rob Ainsley

Two more days of glorious sunny autumn days doing cycle route research round Salisbury. Obviously I couldn’t take my bike everywhere I wanted, because of stern, unbending military rules making me feel most unwelcome as a cyclist. I don’t mean the Army, on the Plain. I mean English Heritage, at Stonehenge.

Gold Hill in Shaftesbury, setting of the famous 1970s Hovis advert (directed by Ridley Scott, no less). Funny they didn’t set it in Chorleywood.
Zig Zag Hill outside Shaftesbury, England’s ziggiest hill, with seven zigs. And every zig had seven zags.
Win Hill, a bit further outside Shaftesbury – a welcome route of peace and quiet away from the motorbikers roaring up and down Zig Zag Hill. My tourer eats bridleways like this for breakfast, but let’s see how your Suzuki copes, hah!

Salisbury Cathedral, famous for its 123m spire. If your Airbnb says it’s ‘within sight of Salisbury Cathedral’, beware. It could actually be in Shaftesbury.
