Glasgow to Edinburgh 1: Bowling to Falkirk

Posted on 26 April 20182 April 2021 by Rob Ainsley

Route-researching this Scottish coast-to-coast. It goes a mere 60 flat miles, all on smooth tarmac canal towpaths. The Clyde Canal goes thirty miles from Bowling to Falkirk via Glasgow; from Falkirk, the Union Canal goes another 30 miles to Edinburgh. Ideal for families, trundlers, and lazy cycle bloggers looking for an easy ride.

Start, at Bowling. Shame there’s nowhere in Britain called Batting or Fielding.

At Dalmuir the cycle racks can cope with all sizes of bike.
Polmont Tunnel. See, there is light at the end. Or perhaps someone with a torch bringing me more bad news.
Falkirk Wheel: half canal, half waltzer. Anderton must be turning in his grave.

But Falkirk’s Kelpies are a cruel hoax. From a distance, you think these much-hyped kitsch sculptures are going to be enormous. In fact they’re TINY. Here’s PROOF.

Big
Not so big
