Ingleton 3: Like a limestone pavement

Posted on 22 February 20192 April 2021 by Rob Ainsley

Final day of research in Yorkshire Dales. Glorious weather, and wonderful views all day, such as the Queen’s Arms about five miles from nowhere. I’ve never enjoyed a cycling day more.

Ingleton 2: Making a Dent in the Dales

Posted on 21 February 20192 April 2021 by Rob Ainsley

More fantastic cycling round the Dales doing route research. Sadly, camera conked out, so can’t show Sedbergh’s library bus shelter, the most amazing view from a UK rail station, or 37 different views of mist from clouded hilltops. But can show this…

Ingleton 1: Highest point in Belgium

Posted on 20 February 20192 April 2021 by Rob Ainsley

Researching cycle routes round Ingleton, one of the best bits of the Yorkshire Dales, along with all the other bits. Gloomy, wet and grey, but that’s enough about me.

Bristol: Miles in the Banksy

Posted on 23 November 20182 April 2021 by Rob Ainsley

Bit of route research round Bristol on my folder. By gum, the city’s unrecognisable from when I used to visit, occasionally, during my time living in Bath in the 1990s. So am I, except that Bristol’s looking newer, smarter and wealthier.

Stanhope 3: Case for a winter bike

Posted on 28 October 20182 April 2021 by Rob Ainsley

Cycled home from route research in Weardale just as winter arrived. Time to switch to a winter bike, then. Hmm. I don’t have a winter bike. Better do something about that, then.

Stanhope 1: England’s highest roads

Posted on 25 October 20182 April 2021 by Rob Ainsley

More cycle route research, this time in chatty, friendly, hilly Weardale – home of England’s highest three roads.

Salisbury 2: Plain speaking, Gold Hills

Posted on 10 October 20182 April 2021 by Rob Ainsley

Two more days of glorious sunny autumn days doing cycle route research round Salisbury. Obviously I couldn’t take my bike everywhere I wanted, because of stern, unbending military rules making me feel most unwelcome as a cyclist. I don’t mean the Army, on the Plain. I mean English Heritage, at Stonehenge.

Salisbury 1: Stonehenge (fail)

Posted on 9 October 20182 April 2021 by Rob Ainsley

Route research round Salisbury. Stonehenge: Fail. There are still many unanswered riddles about the ancient monument, such as, where am I supposed to park my bike, English Heritage? Needs better signage and parking. Staff oblivious, press office hopeless about bike access and facilities. Honestly, anyone would think it was the Stone Age.

Stratford 2: To be or not to be cycling

Posted on 6 October 20182 April 2021 by Rob Ainsley

Final bits of cycle route research round Stratford and Warwick. Threw it down with rain today. No problem for my Ortlieb panniers, which are 100% waterproof. My socks on the other hand are 99% waterproof. Today was the other 1%.
