Tunbridge Wells 3: Fishy stories

Posted on 19 November 20202 April 2021 by Rob Ainsley

Day 3 of cycle route research round Tunbridge Wells. I cycled through two different hamlets called Iden Green, each near a hamlet called Four Wents, also unrelated to each other. So you can guess the surreal theme of today’s route. Yes: fish.

In Ticehurst, I stumbled on one of the most beautiful, quintessentially English, sights I’ve seen so far this trip: a fish and chip van. This bench is where I ate it.
By coincidence, just up the road was this, outside a fish shop. See? Some fish DO need bicycles. Popular politics is never quite as simplistic as we’d like to think. (NB Anyone who wasn’t a right-on student in the 1980s may need to ask an old person about this reference.)
Sunken lane: a characteristic south England thing, caused when a lane on soft ground gets packed down from hundreds of years of footsteps, hooves, wagon wheels and fish.
Bedgebury Forest has a network of bridleways that were well used by horses. And cyclists. But not fish.
