Arran 2: Gravel roads

Posted on 16 October 20202 April 2021 by Rob Ainsley

Continuing route research today, on the gravel roads of South Arran.

There’s a network of gravel roads in the foresty southern half of the island. They’re a bit rough and ready for a road bike, and best tackled with a gravel (or touring) bike. Like the rather patchy tarmac roads in the rest of the island, actually.
Fine autumnal views were the order of the day. As the pubs are all shut, it’ll be the only order of the day.
Picnic lunch was overlooking Holy Island at Whiting Bay. Thanks to the chilly weather, yesterday’s salami and cheese were still fine.
Kildonan’s lovely waterside views are a stiff detour from the main road – down 100m to the village, then up again to rejoin it. Though of course I didn’t take the easier main road option. Because the road was closed.
