Windermere 2: Hardknott, Wrynose, Laurel & Hardy

Posted on 26 June 20192 April 2021 by Rob Ainsley

Awesome cycling day of cycle route research through super Lakes scenery. A lot of tough climbs – Wrynose, Hardknott, Birker Fell and others – but most challengingly, the stairs up to the shower when I got back to the hostel.

Hardknott Pass. It’s knotty. And hard.

Summit of Hardknott Pass. Down from here it’s 30% hairpins with brakes clenched all the way. The road was a testbed for tanks around WWII. To judge by the distressed tarmac on the way down, it still is.
Laurel and Hardy statue in Ulverston (where Stan came from). This is just about the only place you can put a bike – the town is impressively devoid of cycle parking, so its cafes and pubs went unvisited by me.

The lakeside road along Coniston Water. Or is it the waterside road along Lake Coniston?
