Church Stretton 1: Ludlow and the alps

Posted on 24 March 20192 April 2021 by Rob Ainsley

Gorgeous winter-spring day researching cycle routes round Church Stretton and the Shropshire hills.

My bike in front of Ludlow Castle. Despite being of medieval design and experiencing long periods of neglect, the ancient structure is solidly built and in remarkably robust shape. Same goes for the castle.
The Burway, the 1 in 5 ascent from Church Stretton up on to the Long Mynd. It took me half an hour to cycle up, because I had to keep stopping. Not to catch my breath, but because the descending Sunday drivers were scared of the edge and drove over on my side of the road.
y.More of the Burway. It feels rather alpine here, which may explain the constant sound of horns. Or perhaps it’s all those drivers irritated that another car is daring to come the other way on this single-track road. Or even worse, the cyclists, selfishly taking up the extra 5% of road width that the cars need to descend quickly.
