Staffs 2: Roaches and Flash photography

Posted on 12 September 20188 May 2022 by Rob Ainsley

Another wonderful day researching routes round the hillier and fordier bits of the underrated Staffordshire Moorlands.

The scenery in the evening sunshine round Hen Cloud and the Roaches was particularly lovely, and inspired some music for guitar, which you can hear at the bottom of the page.

Remarkable ford that runs the length of the cobbled main street in Butterton. After miles of country lanes full of cow and sheep poo, tyre-cleaning opportunity was welcome.
The Highest Village in Britain. Warning: post contains Flash photography.
The stunning scenery around The Roaches, just north of Leek. I spent half an hour contemplating the view in utter tranquillity, partly because it’s almost all downhill to Leek Wetherspoon from here.

Hen Cloud. Geological features have some odd names round here.

Music for guitar: Hen Cloud

Listen to my piece for classical guitar, written in 2021. It was inspired by the memories of this day’s ride, particularly the glorious evening lanes round the Roaches. (MP3, 3min 45 sec).
