Newcastle: Bridges, tunnels, cake

Posted on 16 January 20202 April 2021 by Rob Ainsley

Day in Newcastle on my disposable folder researching routes and facilities, ie tunnels, metro, cake.

Gateshead Millennium Bridge. It can fold up on itself to allow ships to pass underneath in as little as five minutes. About the same time as it takes my bike to fold up.
Newly refurbed and reopened Tyne Cycle Tunnel. Take that, Greenwich!
Down in the Tunnel it’s still the ceremonial counties. I like the Tunnel. Even if its deployment of apostrophes is a bit haphazard.
Scooting along Hadrian’s Cycleway. All routes lead to Rome.
Bikes – even non-folded ones – go on (most of) Newcastle’s Metro network off-peak. Handy when you have a Wetherspoon to go to before your train back.
